Pets in sheltered housing consultation
Overview
Castle Point Borough Council is developing a dedicated policy on pets in sheltered housing.
Pets are currently not permitted in sheltered housing. However, local arrangements have varied over time, which has led to inconsistent practice across different schemes.
We would like to understand residents’ views, preferences and concerns to help shape a fair, clear and workable policy.
This consultation asks for your views on:
- whether pets should be allowed in sheltered housing
- what types of pets may be suitable
- what rules or conditions should be included in a pet policy
- any concerns residents may have about pets being allowed
- how pets may affect wellbeing, loneliness and community life
- whether pets may support mental health, emotional wellbeing, disability needs or daily life
- what safeguards may be needed for residents and animals
- what should happen if a resident becomes unable to care for their pet
- whether pets should be restricted from some communal areas
- how the Council should respond to damage, nuisance or repeated complaints
- whether different rules may be needed for different schemes or types of accommodation
- whether a trial period should be considered before any permanent change is made
- whether the policy could affect residents differently because of their personal circumstances
Why your views matter
Your feedback will help the Council understand what residents think before any future decisions are made.
We want to make sure any future policy is practical, fair to residents, and considers both the benefits and possible concerns of allowing pets in sheltered housing.
Your responses will also help the Council understand what safeguards, conditions or support arrangements may be needed if the policy changes.
